week 9 story: Why Dog and Cat Are Friends
Why Dog and Cat Are Friends
A cat and a dog lived with a man and a woman in a small village. The man and woman were blessed to have a golden ring in their possession. This wasn't an ordinary golden ring, it was magic. The ring would gift the owner with food, riches, and good luck. But as soon as the ring left your possession, your life returned to normal, instantly.
One night, a stranger snuck into the village, into the house, and stole the magic ring. The dog had an excellent nose and could smell a ham from 3 miles away. The cat had excellent ears and could hear a bell from 3 miles away. When the intruder was leaving the house, he accidentally let out a small burp. The quiet sound woke the cat, and the slight smell woke the dog. By the time they both rose, the stranger was running out the door.
The cat and dog instantly took off after the man. They knew how valuable the ring was to them and their owners. They refused to let their wonderful owners have bad luck and they knew they had to take care of them. The cat led the way by listening to the crunch of leaves as he ran away. After a long game of chase through the forest, the cat and dog finally cornered the thief. The dog growled as deep as he could and the cat swatted his claws as hard as he could. This frightened the stranger and he tossed the ring in their direction and took off. With one final warning bark and hiss, the dog scooped up the ring.
By the time the dog and cat proudly returned home, it was morning. With the magic ring tucked safely into the dog's collar, they pranced the whole way home. The owners were waiting for them when they finally made it home. They greeted their pets with praise, love, lots of belly rubs and ear scratches.

Author's Note
The original story is about owners that have a cat and a dog. They possess a gold ring that brings them good fortune. Then they foolishly sell it and become poor and hungry. The cat and dog realize this and go after the new owners of the golden ring to help their owners. They work together to retrieve the ring and return it home. But, since the cat could jump and run on the roofs of houses, he returned home quicker than the dog. The owners gave all the praise to the cat and none to the dog. The cat took all the credit and didn't speak for the dog. I kept all characters the same, but switched the part where the owners get rid of the ring. I don't believe that anyone would give up this ring willingly, so I switched it to where the ring is stolen. I decided to switch the story to both pets return home at the same time and changing the title to Why Dogs and Cats are Friends. I prefer happy endings and I didn't like the unfair treatment towards the dog in the original.

Hey Gabby, I definitely agree with you that happy endings are the best, especially in regard to animals! I don't think I could read a story where there was a bad ending with the animals since they just don't deserve that. That said, I like that you changed it to the dog and cat working together to assure that their owners are okay! It really emphasizes the love between the animals and their owners, and how these relationships transcend time. Overall, it was really good and sweet to read!
ReplyDeleteHi Gabby, I really enjoyed reading this story. I think the first two sentences could use a transition sentence in between to make it flow better. I like how you chose to allow the cat and dog to arrive at the same time. I think it was also a nice touch to make the couple keep the rings. I agree that I don't think anyone would give up the ring willingly. I also think the title you chose is very fitting. I wrote a story in the earlier weeks based off of why cats and dogs are enemies. So it's interesting to read one about why they are friends. Great job!
