week 2 story: The 3 Squeaky Balls

you can read the newest version of this story here!!!

One day, Katy decided she was gonna go to the new, boutique pet store for her 3 puppies: Josie, Sarah, and Sofia. Sarah and Sofia were identical twin puppies, they were both chihuahuas and had their own strong opinions. Josie was a chocolate lab who loved to have fun. Katy goes up to each puppy and asks, "what special toy can I bring home for you?", Sarah and Sofia immediately run to their toy box and pull everything out, meaning they wanted all new toys! Katy goes over to Josie, who is minding her own business, and asks her the same question, Josie responds by squeezing on her ball 3 times, "squeak, squeak, squeak" and Katy took this as she wanted 3 new squeaky balls.

So off Katy went across town to the newest, fanciest pet store. She walked in and started grabbing all new toys for Sarah and Sofia but became so overwhelmed by the amount of toys, she forgot Josie's squeaky balls! She didn't remember until she was on her way home and walked by the local dog park where she saw a big tub of squeaky balls, just like Josie wanted. Katy decided she would take three of these toys and then replace them when she had a chance. As she bent down to grab them, a large golden retriever came running up to her out of nowhere. Katy looked around to see who the mysterious dog belonged to but she didn't see anyone, she reached down to his collar and read his name, Bailey. When Katy said his name out loud, Bailey nervously wagged his tail and backed away, like he was scared. Katy grabbed the 3 squeaky balls she needed and decided to head home.

As soon as Katy walked into the door, Sarah and Sofia were at her feet barking and jumping to get their new toys. Josie held back, waiting her turn for her new squeaky toys. Katy walked over to Josie, gave her the new toys,  and said "Josie I think there is someone who needs a friend and you're the perfect fit!" Katy put Josie on a leash and headed out the door towards the dog park.

Walking up to the park, Katy couldn't spot the mysterious Bailey, but when they got to the gate and opened it, he came running towards them from a doghouse in the back. At first, Josie was a little nervous, but she soon realized that Bailey was lonely and hadn't been played with for a while. Katy picked up one of the balls and threw it across the park, the 2 dogs immediately took off after it. When they came back,    Josie had the ball but Bailey was still wagging his tail, like he was so happy to finally have a friend.

After a few more trips to the park that week, Katy realized that Josie and Bailey were best friends, and    Bailey needed them. Katy made a trip to the pet store again, bought an extra bed, food bowls, and toys. On her way home she stopped at the park, called for Bailey, and put a leash on him.

Bailey and Josie are now best friends, who live in Katy's backyard, in a dog house she bought just for the 2 of them.

Authors Note:
I chose the fairy tale to retell. The first 2 sisters who asked for everything reminded me of a needy dog that demanded attention. Mary reminded me of a patient, kind, and quiet person which is why I chose her to be a lab. I turned the castle and rose garden into a dog park and a tub of toys. The original story ended with Mary and the basilisk getting married and having a wedding, I spun the ending to the dogs being best friends living in a dog house together.

  1. Hi Gabby! I need more stories like this in my life. I love the whole vibe of it! I wasn't exactly sure where it was going at first. I was in the Epics version of this class last semester so I have read tons of stories--many of them make twists and turns! Was this a children's story? Perhaps a horror? But I loved the way it turned out! I'm glad Bailey and Josie were able to find each other! I can't wait to read more of your stories in the future : )

  2. Hi Gabby, I love the take you took on this story in changing the role of girls into dogs. I am a big dog person and love my puppy so this story was really cute! I really enjoyed reading the original story and seeing these changes, you did such an amazing job.
